Polish that Smile – Tips for Healthy Teeth

Posted by Steve on Jul 15, 2008 in Guest Post | 5 comments

There’s an area of our body that most of us neglect even as we actively pursue fitness and health in every other aspect – the mouth. Oral and dental hygiene is an important aspect of holistic health, and must be treated with the significance it deserves.

Most people persist with unhealthy teeth and bad breath simply because they are afraid of trips to the dentist’s office and trysts with the dentist’s chair. But they do not realize that they are doing themselves a huge disservice by not servicing their teeth and caring for it as they do other parts of their body.

Root canal treatments, plaque, cavities and the like – they’re the scourge of healthy teeth, and to keep them at bay, here are a few easy tips:

    • Brush and floss your teeth after each meal. If that’s not possible, at least rinse your mouth thoroughly to remove stray particles stuck on your teeth.

    • Use a toothbrush with soft bristles to prevent damage to your gums.

    • Clean your tongue regularly to prevent build up of plaque and minimize bad breath.

    • Use a tooth paste that contains fluoride.

    • Do not brush your teeth vigorously or you risk damage to your gums.

    • Clean the insides and the chewing surfaces to remove lodged particles of food.

    • Avoid foods with too much sugar like candy, biscuits, pastries and cakes like the plague. The sugar sticks to your teeth and provides a rich medium for the growth of bacteria which causes dental plaque.

    • Sugary foods like hard-boiled candy and lollipops that you suck on continuously cause more damage to your teeth because of the constant and continued exposure to sugar.

    • Schedule regular dental check ups to get your teeth checked and cleaned.

    • Regular usage of tobacco products and caffeinated drinks gives your teeth an ugly, stained look.

    • Juices and fruits with a high acidic content can also affect the acidic balance in your mouth and cause harm to your enamel.

    • Replace your toothbrush once every two months or earlier if it’s badly frayed.

    • Follow a diet that’s rich in fresh fruits and vegetables that contain vitamins which are essential for healthy teeth and gums.

    • Eat foods rich in calcium for stronger teeth.

    • Avoid carbonated drinks with sugar as they damage your enamel.

In addition to following these tips for healthy teeth, ensure that you visit a dentist if you notice the first signs of red, tender, bleeding or swollen gums, loose teeth, pus in your gums and teeth, tooth aches and intense sensitivity to hot and cold food.

  1. I am not eating candy and other this junk and I use special liquid to clean my teeth at evening. (toothbrush also is in my arsenal) It’s enought?

  2. nice tips to keep teeth healthy. I think all of us follow most of them already. I am confused about Fluoride based toothpastes because I have read on a forum that fluoride has nothing to do with teeth.

  3. Nice tips.

I often hear conflicting things when it comes to oral health though. Such as you say to use a soft brush, but I have heard a harder brush is better to remove plaque. Also you say to brush your teeth after each meal, and I have heard this is not good because this is the time your mouth naturally produces a substance to protect your teeth, so you are brushing it away. Any pointers here, which are correct?

  5. Super post

There’s nothing like a greatsmile. But only a few are blessed with pearly white teeth, and our teeth normally become discolored as we grow up.
