Just a quick post as I wanted to get this off my chest.
I have been dealing with my weight for 10 years now and I have tried a lot of different diet programs, read books and taken advice from trainers and other successful weight loss experts on and off line. So I think I have some pretty good knowledge when it comes to dieting and weight loss.
Right now there are 4 people in my life that are, what I consider to be fitness or dieting newbies and they are driving me crazy!!!
2 of them are having a lot of really great success 6 weeks into it as a result of a new years resolution. They are following a limited diet and working out 4-5 days a week. I am very proud of them and the effort they have put in. But….. I could do without the advice.
I guess they now consider themselves experts and are offering advice to me on what I am eating and how I’m exercising. I really do enjoy discussing stuff like that as I am passionate about it. But for me anyway it’s hard to take that advice because I have been there. I have been in that position where you are having a ton of success and feel like you are unstoppable. From my experience though it doesn’t last.
As much as I don’t want to see it happen I know they will plateau, they will get sick of eating the same foods everyday and spending 2 hours a day in the gym. Life will get in the way and they will have to adapt. Even though I’m struggling with my weight as well, I will be there to help however I can when it happens.
For now all I can do is nod my head and humor them, But if I hear “Do you know how many carbs are it that” one more time I might just lose it.
How many carbs are in this post?
for newbies, you are in the starting period where you are trying different kinds of diet that will help you lose weight. if you already get one that is effective to you, continue with that. dedication is the important thing you should always remember.
Ha Ha I guess I walked right into that one Andrew. There are 0 carbs in this post, if there were they would at least be the complex kind
I hear that!
I am not a diet newbie, but I am a newbie for success. It is funny, b/c I am being careful NOT to give people advice. Liked the post!
Maybe it’s the combo “new thing + success” that causes this? I know I’ve been that way… well, I’m like that with every new thing in my life, after all, so it’s not so surprising… but now I finally understand too how annoying it can be!
Newbies can be a little much. Just remember we were there once to! Just smile and tell them great job! Maybe a little advice back at them to say “hey! Be sure to keep up the faith even when you plateau.. It will happen, but you can motivate through!”
When you start exercising again after a long lay off, you always see fantastic results in the first few weeks, because you are more motivated.
But like you said sticking to most diets is very difficult and just isn’t practical over the long term. I’ve lost weight on numerous occasions and quickly regained it all and more.
The winners are definitely the ones who can lose it and keep it off.
I agree that the obsession with carbs, etc.. are a faulty and failed method of going about trying to lose weight.
Steve, Once you lose weight, and know you can do it, then diet programs and exercise routines lose their importance in your life. But changing to healthier foods can have a lasting effect, as it has on me, and that alone has kept my weight in check.
Newbies might be too motivated (at the beginning of the program) to say that stuffs. Good if they can keep up.
I guess it all comes down to discipline no matter what program an that is where I struggle.
Do I know that one all too well. I love to hear my best friends bitch and moan after new years about how much weight they’ve gained and see them go on fad diets like “atkins”…. lose 10 lbs and gain it back in 2 months.
