This has been a difficult lesson to learn and was quite a challenge fitting it into my new lifestyle.
We are sent mixed messages all the time, one minute it’s “reduce your fat intake and buy fat free foods” then it’s “fat free foods are bad for you”. It seems that no one can make up their mind about what you should be eating anymore. Don’t even get me started on the whole low carb thing. (I will post something on that later).
I think food is something to be enjoyed and not feared. Eating is something that dominates our lives everyday from the cradle to the grave. If you have to dedicate so much time to an activity like that, shouldn’t you at least enjoy it?
In my opinion that is why so many diets fail. You end up cutting out a lot if not all of your favourite foods. The result is that you end up giving up and binge on the very things you were supposed to cut out. I have done this countless times in the past and with every failed attempt came a new and heavier starting weight for the next diet.
So what is the solution?
Moderation.
I am able to have chips/nachos or ice cream and chocolate on a regular basis. I just watch my portion sizes which really is the key and I use the “earn it or burn it” method with exercise. (more on that later)
The bottom line is that food is not just fuel as many experts preach. It’s centered around our lives weather your having ice cream with the kids, a romantic pasta dinner with your significant other or a family dinner with family and friends.
Enjoy all the positives that a variety food has to offer. You don’t need to watch every gram of fat, carb or protein you consume.
Everything in moderation!
I have heard this hundreds of times by so many different people. But I wonder how many of them actually live it?
Do you?
Share and Enjoy

Heh, I’m currently (re)learning it! Because I was silly and tried to do things too well, count every little thing, whatever… The result? “Diet mentality” and binges. For someone who never had a binge-eating problem before the past two months, that sure was a shock. So I went back to my good old “everything in moderation” habits, and I’m feeling way better mentally and physically (not to mention the cravings slowly going away, or being weaker).
So, yeah, moderation is a good key IMHO.
Hey Kery,
That diet mentality is really bad. It’s what keeps people fat. I’m glad you’re back on track again.
I agree with you but diet is an important measure in preventing the diabetes.
You are so right – I have come to the conclusion that “diets” simply don’t work because every diet out there is just restricting you in some way or another. I believe you can pretty much eat anything – just in moderation! Of course you should try and eat the “healthier” things first, and more often, and try to not eat too many fatty or sugary foods, but there is nothing wrong with the occasional piece of cake or chocolate, as the key is – moderation! – Moderation can be quite hard though if you like something very much…
