High Protein Breakfast
Ah breakfast, the most important meal of the day. Some of the most common tips that dieters are given while trying to lose weight is to never skip a meal and start your day with a healthy breakfast.
I have always eaten breakfast except when I’m extremely rushed. Most of my breakfast meals consist of either cereal, bagels, toast, oatmeal or eggs on occasion. These foods have always left me feeling full enough but I’d find myself feeling hungry again an hour later.
I thought that is was just my body’s increased metabolism firing on all cylinders early in the morning. While I’m sure that is part of the answer it never completely explained why I was so hungry again so quickly.
High Protein Breakfast Foods
The missing link to the breakfast dilemma was protein. All of my previous breakfasts were very high in carbohydrates (even the complex kind) and drastically low in protein.
The solution was to introduce more protein and cut back on the amount of carbs I was eating. Here are a few sources for getting more protein at breakfast time.
- Cottage Cheese
- Turkey Bacon
- Egg Whites
- Peanut Butter
- Soynut Butter
- Low Fat Cheese’s
- Almond Butter
- Chicken Bacon
- Turkey Sausage
- Quinoa
- Protein Shakes
Those are just a few higher protein breakfast items. There are many more I’m sure. Leave a comment to suggest a something I’ve missed.
Breakfast Alternatives
Have you ever had breakfast for dinner? I know I have. Sometimes it was pancakes or a bowl of cereal. I’ve even had bacon and eggs for dinner a few times.
So why not flip it and have things you would normally have at lunch or dinner for breakfast? Below is a list of some of my favorite “Dinner for breakfast meals”
- Tuna Sandwich
- Steak and sweet potatoes
- Chile
- Homemade Pizza
- Salmon
- Chicken Salad
- Veggie Lasagna
To be honest most of these meals are leftovers from the night before. I usually make a lot of extra food as part of being organized for weight loss. I divide a large meal into it up into smaller portions so that I can make my food dollars stretch and it prevents me from eating out too often.
I will be posting some of my favorite high protein breakfast recipes over the next few weeks. So subscribe to my RSS feed so that you don’t miss them.

Yay! This is great post. I echo your suggestions. If it doesn’t feel too heavy and “weird” I think a sandwich or left-overs are perfect for breakfast. We’re a dessert b-fast culture (doughnuts, pastries) which when you think about it is kind or “weird”.
Also, thank you for including the wonderful whole grain quinoa! So full of nutrients, 16 g of protein per serving, and gluten-free!

I am a huge Dinner for Breakfast fan. I’m really not a big breakfast food guy so I’ll eat leftovers from the night before.

@jolene When I tell people that I had a tuna sandwich for breakfast they always respond with “that’s weird”. I find it funny that you used that exact term
I was actually just turned on to quinoa and I like it. Although I only have 1 recipe for it so if you have any please send them my way.
@Joe I love Chile for breakfast. We will make a huge batch in the crock pot (slow cooker) and have it for dinner then breakfast then lunch then….maybe we should cook less.
By the way your comment was #500 on my site. I’ve added the link to your site in your comment and made it do follow.
Thanks
Jolene you were 499 close enough I gave you one too.

Even when I eat a huge bowl of cereal I’m still hungry before lunch. I need that protein to start the day. I like to make leftover omelets.

What I’ve started to do is take an egg and mix it with mushrooms, brocoli, ham or turkey and a little bit of cheese, then I pour it into a muffin tin and bake it in the oven.
375 for 12-15 minutes and you have a great high protein meal that you can take on the go.
I pop them in the oven and make my lunch etc.. then just grab it and off to work I go.
You can also refrigerate them, 45 seconds in the microwave and their nice and warm.

Informative content on your post. I don’t skip breakfast and therefore sometimes lunch skipped. But high protein breakfast goods for health.

The picture’s what caught my eye- I had heard that Honey Nut cheerios was one of the better “weight loss breakfasts”. Is something wrong with a bowl of the bee?

All carbs and no protein makes Steve a tired boy. Cherrio’s aren’t “bad” they have fiber etc.. but almost no protein.
You can counter the effects of all those carbs/sugar by eating them with a side of Turkey bacon or eggs.

Hungry!!!! That explains why I’m always hungry way too early before lunch time. Will aim to get more protein at breakfast – tuna and turkey sandwiches/ chicken salads, instead of the daily rice balls.

I absolutely dig out muesli (I buy my in Germany, since I live next to the border: cheap and filling), but I’ve found that replacing milk with cottage cheese or soy milk works better for me.
As for eating breakfast for dinner and dinner for breakfast, I don’t find this weird at all. For me, it’s more of a cultural thing. If I’m hungry, I’m hungry, that’s all. I’ve eaten cod for a snack at 4 pm, cerealsfor dinner, and vegetables and meat for breakfast in the past, and I’ll certainly do it again, more than once. (Alright, I also ate cassoulet toulousain for breakfast once, but I admit that’s rather hardcore.)

Big breakfast is a great idea. I will try it too. I ate a lot for breakfast but changed recently, but I think I need to go back and do it again…
